Users across community forums and social media have discovered that double-clicking the Digital Crown no longer toggles between the active app and the previously used app or watch face, disrupting a longstanding multitasking workflow.
The removal of the gesture stems from Apple's introduction of Live Rewind, an on-device Audio Intelligence capability reserved for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. On next-generation models launching this fall, double-pressing the Digital Crown summons an instant 15-second ambient speech transcript. However, instead of preserving app switching on unsupported hardware, Apple unified the gesture behavior across all devices.
On previous generations, double-clicking the Digital Crown now simply invokes the dynamic app grid—the exact same action triggered by a single press. Consequently, owners of older Apple Watch models lose a rapid multitasking gesture without gaining the audio intelligence feature that replaced it. Users who prefer not to use Live Rewind on newer models also currently lack an option to reassign the double-click action back to app switching in watch settings.
