Apple has announced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, introducing sweeping upgrades to its biometric tracking stack. Equipped with a redesigned optical sensor architecture, the new smartwatches narrow the telemetry divide against endurance staples from Garmin, WHOOP, and Oura by introducing continuous 5-second heart rate tracking, frequent HRV sampling, and a native Readiness score.
The heart of the Series 12 and Ultra 4 is a redesigned optical and electrical sensor stack driven by the S11 chip. The sensor measures passive heart rate every five seconds all day, paired with heart rate variability (HRV) captured up to every five minutes. watchOS separates these metrics into Recovery HRV for daily recovery baselines and overall HRV for cardiovascular trends. A new on-watch Readiness app consolidates sleep score, acute training load, and vitals into a 0–10 readiness rating with direct pacing recommendations.
In addition, an upgraded Health app introduces Health Age and an on-demand clinical biomarker panel in partnership with Quest Diagnostics. Users can evaluate cardiovascular biological metrics against chronological age, while integrating optional metabolic labs directly from their iPhone. Preserved Benefit: Athletes receive continuous, high-frequency heart rate and recovery metrics without needing third-party subscription trackers like WHOOP.
Explicit Trade-Off: High-frequency optical polling maintains single-day battery runtime on Series 12 (up to 24 hours), lagging behind Garmin's multi-week endurance.
While the Ultra 4 extends outdoor GPS tracking up to 25 hours and everyday battery up to 50 hours, Series 12 remains an everyday charge device rated for 24 hours. The S11 silicon introduces on-device Audio Intelligence, powering Live Rewind conversation recaps and emergency sound detection within a secure enclave. Apple also resurrected premium ceramic cases for Series 12 in pearl white and night blue finishes, starting at $399, while Ultra 4 starts at $799.
