Introduced in watchOS 5, the Walkie-Talkie service provided push-to-talk voice messaging directly between paired wrist devices via FaceTime Audio protocols. While niche, it established a dedicated user base for immediate wrist communication. Apple is phasing out the standalone utility without an immediate direct replacement, leaving real-time audio messaging entirely to third-party developers or standard audio messages in Messages.
Simultaneously, Apple is altering Digital Crown hardware ergonomics. Double-clicking the Digital Crown has historically triggered fast switching between your two most recently opened apps—a staple multitasking gesture for power users tracking workouts while checking podcasts or timers. Under the new build, double-clicking will mimic single-click behavior or open consolidated system controls, eliminating wrist multitasking muscle memory.
