Small businesses across Latin America just gained the ability to ditch bulky card readers and expensive hardware terminals overnight. Apple has officially expanded Tap to Pay on iPhone across eight additional countries in the region: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Peru.
With this rollout, independent entrepreneurs, local market merchants, and mobile professionals can accept in-person contactless payments directly using only a compatible iPhone and an authorized partner banking app.
Tap to Pay on iPhone leverages the embedded Near Field Communication (NFC) chip and the Secure Element built directly into iOS hardware. Running on iPhone XS or newer equipped with the latest iOS release, merchants can accept debit cards, credit cards, Apple Pay, Apple Watch taps, and third-party digital wallets seamlessly.
Unlike conventional external card terminals that transmit payment tokens over Bluetooth or auxiliary ports, Tap to Pay processes all transactional authorizations inside Apple's Secure Element. Card numbers are never stored in memory or sent to Apple servers, giving buyers and sellers complete cryptographic confidentiality.
For retail staff and small store owners on their feet all day, handling continuous mobile checkout sessions requires reliable battery management. Check how daily usage affects your device runtime with our Apple Watch battery estimator or explore hardware specs in the sensor matrix comparison.
Preserved Benefit: Complete freedom from bulky POS card terminals, lower startup costs for independent businesses, and enterprise-grade NFC payment security right inside standard iPhones.
Explicit Trade-Off: Acceptance requires merchant partner apps with local transaction processing fees, and full feature functionality remains strictly tied to iPhone XS or newer hardware running current iOS releases.
