For millions of Apple Watch wearers across Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, paying for a morning flat white or tapping through transit gates has long required reaching for a physical card or scanning a QR code on an iPhone. Apple has officially launched Apple Pay in India, bringing native contactless payments to iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch across thousands of merchant terminals nationwide. The launch marks a milestone expansion for Apple's financial ecosystem, albeit with a tightly focused initial banking rollout.
The arrival of Apple Pay allows eligible cardholders to complete transactions at point-of-sale terminals without punching in physical PINs or waiting for SMS-based one-time passwords (OTPs). Payments are processed through the NFC chip inside Apple Watch or iPhone, authenticated on the wrist via wrist detection and passcode or on iOS via Face ID and Touch ID.
At launch, Apple has partnered with Axis Bank, enabling customers with Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards to add their credentials directly into the Apple Wallet app. Cardholders can add cards on iPhone and sync them to Apple Watch via the Watch companion app under Wallet & Apple Pay. Supported hardware spans modern wearable generations documented in our Apple Watch model identifier, while NFC radio and biometric tokenization interact directly with Apple's onboard Secure Element.
Apple Pay works anywhere standard NFC contactless card readers are deployed, alongside in-app purchases and Safari web checkouts. Apple confirmed that Apple Pay is now active in over 90 countries and backed by more than 11,000 banking institutions globally. For Indian wearable owners monitoring their device battery while using daily NFC radio polling, our Apple Watch battery tool provides real-world runtime insights across different daily routine scenarios.
However, the single-bank partnership at debut leaves out millions of cardholders relying on HDFC, ICICI, SBI, or RuPay credit networks, who must await future partner expansions.
Preserved Benefit: Seamless, zero-OTP contactless NFC payments on Apple Watch and iPhone across thousands of retail stores and digital platforms for Axis Bank cardholders.
Explicit Trade-Off: Launch exclusivity with Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard cards leaves users of other major Indian banks and the domestic RuPay network temporarily unsupported.
